Friday Session and Crit

5 ideas for typeface (Elon Musk).

'we are building artificial intelligence through the use of social media and the internet'

Today I tried developing the idea of Elon Musks slightly forced style of being unconventional and breaking the 'norm' for a CEO of a multi national business.
I broke this down to three key words;

IDEAS
  1. Abrupt. Where the type has sharp and sudden swipes taken from it, creating a typeface which feels incomplete and rushed. I lie the form of the M and X is this, as they look symbolic and could be look good on a logotype if used in the right context.
  2. Quicker. where only the key parts of the type are kept, similar to the Musks sometimes quick and off hand personality. I like the form of this text, it could be displayed in an animation where all the letterforms are formed from one strip/line (-); conveying the renewable nature of nearly all of musks work.
  3. Impulsive takes inspiration from Musks short attention span when it comes to working on projects. Over the years we can see that Musk will start a project, develop it and complete, then immediately go onto another project, i.e. flamethrower project. Here I have jerked and distorted the text, creating a type which feels like it being pulled in multiple directions, like Musks ever changing inspirations for projects.
  4. I built a grid system based off a blueprint drawing of one of Musks rockets from his SpaceX company. This grid could create some interesting geometric forms, and the theme of interplanetary travel could be explored with this type form.
  5. How can I use ideas/themes created in research of Elon Musk

From the crit I learnt that;
  • Approach the typeface the same way Elon Musk approaches his work.
  • I should focus on typefaces that use a theory
  • I should experiment with a grid system that the letters fit into (tesselate) to form a jigsaw.
  • See how far a typeface can go before it become intelligible
  • Watch interviews and docs on Elon Musk to find a literal feeling/mood about him, which can be explored through typeface.
  • Already existing typefaces. experiment with tesla rocket logos
  • Alphabet A-Z work on each letterform till I loose concentration - work fast to keep process interesting (similar to Elon musk)
  • How can kerning be used?
