Further Artist Research  


Larry Levan 

  • Levan played sets between New York and Chicago mostly 
  • Use map layouts from either city to build a grid system for typeface 
  • Use famous imagery from around both cities
  • Paradise Garage was a club which Levan had a decade long residency at, where he would host 24 hour long sets which would include 'A listers' like Madonna 
  • Levans club sets were described as 'Saturday Mass' and had a strong cult following.
  • Could play on the idea of contrasting the 'Saturday mass' at Levan's club night to mass at church. 
  • Started playing alongside Frankie Knuckles -  Hands/body form could be a topic to build around. 
  • Larry Levin describes his inspiration as come from philidelphia soul, upbeat rock and 'Manco's Jazz inflected eclecticism'

Hunee 

  • A disc jockey - could play on the role of horse riding jockey a DJ jockey
  • Works under Rush hour records -  Could try create a rushed effect through the scanner?
  • 'Rush family has a strong sense of pride in always working with and feeding off that impulse and faith' - A mission statement relating to Rush Hour records belief in music they love. 
  • Rush Hour records first residency was at Paradsico club in Amsterdam - Paradisco and Paradise could be linked together on both sides of the vinyl. 
  • Hunee starting Djing in Bochum, near Dortmund
  • He was sold records from drug dealer friends at first 
  • He was collector of records from a young age - could be presented through the stacking/repetition of imagery/type 
  • Moved to Berlin when he was 19 for compulsory social service. This move opened his eyes to a much bigger scene of sold and tech music. 
  • Hunee didn't enjoy his service at all and described his stance as towards it as, 'I don't believe in the concept of a nation' 
  • In his first year Hunee lived in a HIV 'dying house' where most if not all the residents had HIV. Here he met a lot of people who were heavily involved with the techno and gay scene in Berlin who introduced him to the scene.
