Norwegian Wood Development + Critique
I decided to develop the book idea based on Toru Watanabe's indecisiveness to choose between his love interests, presented through the jumbled arrangement of arrows. The blue and red colour scheme used throughout is based on the banner colours of the student protesters in the film, and the opposing powers they're trying to overthrow. Used the scanned laser cut plywood as a main imagery as I felt that they added depth to the cover image; and emphasises the convoluted relationships he's juggling between
Critique Notes
From the crit I realised that the blurb of my cover wasn't communicating the same theme as my front cover, and that it wasn't legible. This along with the lacking of a design for the spine, gave me enough room to develop a a cover which nearly resembled a final book cover.
Out of the two, preferred the front cover on this design, but the amount of black was overwhelming and gave the impression the book was a sort of horror style novel. I experimented with the colour, but most didn't work with the front cover, and the arrows were lost on the back without the black
Although, the type was still pretty illegible. Through research into Emigre Magazine, I was able to present my type in an order that communicated the importance of love triangle in the film, through the sizing of the type, while also having a slightly distorted layout to present the indecisive theme
