Brief 1 Evaluation
I chose to present my specimen in a simple straight forward flip book style booklet, so that there wouldn’t be anything distracting the reader from the type, which they would be using as a guide to build the kit. Although from the critique the general feeling was the specimen was too basic and needed a front cover to introduce the typeface. I have added this as well as rationale page to the booklet, so that it feels more like a complete booklet. The one letter per page suits the instruction manual style of the booklet, and the simple and delicate line works well with the pastel colours, as they promote the calm feel to the type. Playing with the size of the text was suggested and using other materials like string and layering on tracing paper was suggested. The idea of layering letters over one another could have created some interesting forms, but I feel it would convolute the booklet and take away from the straightforward approach to the wayfinding and kit building theme. One of the drawbacks of this typeface was that while the letterforms all came out in interesting forms, some aren’t very legible and may not function as wayfinding devices very well. It was mentioned that there could be some pages added between the pages displaying the letters; But I feel this would again only take away from the focus on the form of the lettering and the create an excess of information which wouldn’t contribute to the theme of the booklet. In response to the brief, I feel that my ‘machine’ does answer the brief in part, as the user can create a typeface from with it, that is completely unique to them, as they control all aspects of the ‘building process’ of the kit/machine, therefore facilitating the experimentation of typefaces, within the confines of my machine. I feel that my machine allows the user to put their own personality and emotions into the typeface as they have the choice as how they want to approach the constructing of it, while the machine having its own personality and characteristics, depending on how the user wants to use/ construct it. I feel as though this project has allowed me to gain the best out of analogue and digital processes. I don’t usually work with 3d forms, but working with my hands instead of on software mostly, has really enabled me to create a set of forms which are unique and personal to me. Which in turn has allowed me to develop on a more digital level, where I can get a cleaner finish. Looking outside of the topic area (designers) for this brief has really encouraged me to take inspiration from aspects of peoples work, and how this has an impact on design, that I would have never considered before. I.e. the heart beat monitors you find at hospitals, was one the starting points for this whole brief, which has now enable me to translate into a whole type form.
