Elon Musk Notes & Crit

  • CEO of SpaceX and Tesla - Both of these revolve around his vision to reduce the effects of global warming through sustainable energy.
  • Future of life institute - working to limit the growth of AI technology
  • Mercurial/impulsive personality - works in very calculated field. This is contrasted by volatile impulsive personality
  • Patterns in stock - stock fell after 'impulsive decision' to smoke weed on joes rogan podcast
  • This emits a characteristic of forced unconventionality. - this could be portrayed in a physical sense through forcing a method to create a style of text which it normally isn't used for.
  • 'At Tesla we're trying to make things that someone loves, like truly gives them joy'
Potential ideas;
  1. Typeface is more complete in successful areas of life. - disrupted in harder times (bullied as a child) and more complete in successful areas of his life - typeface follows trends (market value) The peaks of the market value could work as the ascender sand the lowest points in market value could work as the baseline.
  2. Impulsive personality mixed with factual ordered industry - presented through different type who's form reacts to a key word relating to Elon Musk. - Could place these unordered loose type forms in an ordered grid system to contrast his erratic personality in comparison to the structured market he works within.
  3. Following in Musk's process of working on a project then quickly loosing attention and moving onto another project. i could create a typeface which revolves around using a number of processes to create it, switching between them whenever i get loose my attention or when I think of a more interesting way of presenting it.

Research

Quotes from Joe Rogan interview;
  • ' I don't think you'd want to be me...its very hard to turn it off' - referring to 'never ending explosion of ideas' - Never ending type - could be displayed in mind map form/puzzle/cluster of letters.
  • ' Other peoples minds weren't working in the same way as mine... thought I was insane when I was five or six' - Isolation
  • 'At tesla we're trying to make things that someone truly loves, like truly gives them joy'
  • ' I like to do something useful for other people, that I like doing'
  • ' People are nicer than you think, give them a chance' 'Give more credit to others and don't assume they're mean till they are' - Spreads a venerable and honest approach. contrary to how media portray him.
Key Words;
  • Franticness to his creativity
  • Abrupt
  • Impulsive
  • Isolation
  • Never ending explosion of ideas
From Thursday's crit I have learnt that I should experiment with free forms, but place within parameters. This was the inspiration behind a new typeface which would use scanned images of previous typefaces I've made, but distorted and place in a manor that replicates the frantic, impulsive nature to Elon Musks creative process. This type also feels slightly isolated but also feels very connected in other parts, a theme I would like to explore with Musk. This distorted version of the typeface has made a sort of map to build a typeface from.

Here I have experimented with free forms but within the restriction of my own previously scanned typefaces. The scans have created an open form which can be used to create many forms, but is kept within the parameters of my scanned typefaces.

Crit comments;
  • key word type experiments are good but feel underdeveloped; could these idea be taken to further extremes or perhaps mixed together - Abrupt and impulsive typeface
  • Grid idea is a strong concept, lots of potential shape forms - could be animated, consider dimension
  • Use of grids are relevant to his field of work.
