Mash Graphic Identity
Experimental Typeset created this graphic identity for Mash Holdings, a Tokyo based food company. The initial graphic identity was developed through application logo systems; type design; type design; various patterns; name cards; envelopes and exterior signage. They took inspiration from Metabolism architecture, a popular Japanese form of architecture, which fuses ideas of architectural megastructures and biological growth. Typeset presented the ideas in metabolism architecture through the growth, modularity movement and structuralism through a graphic system of arrows.
They present the pattern of the different parts of Mash as being connected to one underlying structure. And no matter how different the separate parts seem to be in, they are all connected through the use of the same fabric. This sense of connectedness is something i'd want to reciprocate in my typeface; whether that be through the theme of the text or through the anatomy of the typeface.

These plans were based from the plan to reorganise and expand Tokyo to cater for a population beyond 10 million. The design was for a linear city that used a series 9km modules that stretched 80km across Tokyo Bay. The perimeter of each of the modules was organised into three levels of looping highways, as Tange was adamant that an efficient communication system would be key to modern living.
