Connection to a place
Soulful house/deep soul house is most prominent in Chicago, New York, London, Brazil, Melbourne and South Africa.
Audience demographic
Soul house remains fairly underground with a scene similar to the soul and jazz-funk scene in the 70's and 80's. The demographic is predominantly people in their late 20's upwards, with many liking the sound as reminiscent of what they grew up on (soul, funk disco coupled with 80's electronic music). The audience has recently adapted to fit in teens and people in their early 20's through a more 2 step 'mainstream' approach to the genre.
Cultural Links
New York City was the epicentre for the musical and cultural evolution of Soul House. By the late 70's, the city was a melting pot of more cultures and ethnicities than ever before. Black people had a gained a foothold in mainstream culture, but were still poor and frustrated. At the same time; blacks, gays, latinos, africans and numerous others marginalised, pioneered cultural movements such as soul house. Nightclubs became some of the most socially progressive places in the country.
'A new culturally significant and uniquely connective sound for a radical and significant time in popular culture'
By 1977 Larry Levin, a teenager disc jockey at Continental Baths, gained a reputation for blending bits of progressive rock, soul and rhythm and blues, and creating mixes which broken down into longer, break-laden mixes. Using drum machines to replace live drumming on soulful disco classics and laying sweeping, drawn-out melodies on top created a distinct dance soulful sound. Through his work Levin inspired a generation of soul house dj/remixers.
