Brief 2 Evaluation
1. This typeface got the most positive reaction out of my initial ideas. It was discussed that the fonts anatomy was good and that it was backed up with a justified reason.
2. The shorten typeface wasn’t received very as the type seemed a bit to obvious in relation to the ‘short’ theme I was going for. This was helpful as it allowed me to focus on thinking outside the box when it came to my development work.
3. My impulsive typeface had a similar aesthetic to the abrupt typeface. There were positive reactions to some of letters; ‘X’, ‘H’ but the overall feeling was that there wasn’t a clear theme which brought the typeface together.
4. The response to the logo’d created from merging these typefaces wasn’t very positive, as the there wasn’t a clear relation to Musk or his work, so the logos felt a bit empty and devoid of any meaning.
This led me to build a typeface which was more personal to Musk and his interests.
I felt that my initial approach to Elon Musks personal traits and characteristics was a stronger basis to build my project on, instead of focusing on his business side of life. Once I had developed a significant amount research about his personality from interviews and general response to cultural changes and media probing, I was able to build upon it with research relating to the way he is perceived through his work and how there are fundamental similarities and differences between the two lifestyles. Both these sets of research gave me a more rounded image of how Elon Musk projects portray elements of his own being and have their own distinctive agenda, i.e SpaceX communicates his inherent interest in exploration and expanding the human agenda outside of Earth into space travel. In addition I feel i’ve explored a range of development ideas that have taken influence a typeface which has a strong link to Elon Musk and how I have perceived him as a person and as a business magnet. Furthermore, peer critiques gave me good feedback as to how my typeface had developed from more literal forms to something that has a clear inspiration of Musk behind it. Saying this though, the typeface and logo could have been developed further in physical formats, on top of distorting the text. This could have been in the format of laser cutting, or similar processes which emulate the processes used by Tesla, The Boring Company. Although I feel the main drawback of my project was the linking of research outside of Elon Musk and his companies, to my typeface. Saying this, I do like the logo and type, but I feel that there wasn’t enough of an influence from other typeforms, on the final design. This was brought up in a peer critique of my project; they thought that the typeface communicated the theme clearly and could be used in relation to Tesla with its jagged, sharp anatomy.
Overall I think i’ve answered the brief in a way which has gone further than face value with Elon, which has created a type which has a strong aesthetic connection to my chosen designer.
